LOOK AT HIM HE’S SO HAPPY UGH
This may or not be making me cry. (Hint, I am.)
Now, I’m not completely deaf. I actually consider myself quite lucky, when it comes to my hearing loss. Sure, I’m severely to profoundly deaf now and can only hear out of one ear with my hearing aid in.
But when I first lost my hearing, I was already learning to speak. And it was only such a mild hearing loss to start with. A couple years of speech therapy was all it took for me to go through life without people realising I’m deaf unless I told them. (I’m not even kidding. Went to school with a guy for three years before he realised I was deaf.)
But this technology just makes me extraordinarily happy. I don’t have implants yet, but I will one day. And I am so grateful that I am in the country where hearing technology is one of the best. (Side note: the person who invented cochlear implants was born in the same town as me.)
And now, they’re making this technology better.
For mild-moderate hearing losses, it is possible to get implants with no outside bits.
I can’t even imagine what it’d be like to go to the beach with friends and actually enjoy myself. More importantly, things like that could save lives. Deaf people can’t always hear the smoke alarm if it goes off at night (I know I can’t).
So this is just a post to say, technology like this is bloody amazing.
